Liberty or freedom is the ability to make choices and to take responsibility for the decisions we make. Freedom gives people the right to act, provided their actions are not harmful to others.

Americans are proud of their freedom and have made many sacrifices to protect and defend their freedom. In the past, Americans have fought in revolution and war to guarantee every citizen the right to make choices. To this day, Americans can be found marching in protest, bringing cases to court, and speaking out about important issues because they believe freedom is important.

Because America is such a diverse society, no one can say that there is only one way to do things or to think about things. Instead Americans have learned to respect the right of each individual to be unique and to contribute to society in his or her own way. Freedom provides the opportunity for citizens to express their own individuality.
