Strand 1: MOTOR SKILLS AND MOVEMENT

Motor skill development includes both small muscle and large muscle movements. Gross (large) motor skills include walking, kicking, hopping, galloping, running, sliding, skipping, leaping, and jumping. Fine (small) motor skills include activities to strengthen the hand and wrist, helping students to begin to develop pre-writing skills.

Standard PE 4 yr.1.1

Demonstrate control and balance during movement that moves the child from one place to another (for example, walk forward in a straight line, hop, run and stop, change direction, and jump over low objects).
  • Dance - Strictly No Elephants
Children will move around in a designated area as they move like the animals in the story.
  • Drama - Hello Toes, Hello Feet
Children will act out the story by copying the actions the little girl has done while wearing different shoes  to help demonstrate the beginning, middle, and end of the story.
  • Large Movements - Dance
Children will listen to music and dance to the beat of that music using large coordinated movements of isolated body parts.  An adult or peer will be holding up cards to demonstrate what body part to move.
  • Persistence Through Movement
Set up an obstacle course while playing in a large space while using materials such as cones, balls, hoops, scarfs, etc.  Children will be asked to perform challenging actions at different stations throughout the course such as jumping jacks, running a specific distance, balancing on a balance beam, etc.
  • Persistence Through Movement 2
Set up an obstacle course while playing in a large space while using materials such as cones, balls, hoops, scarfs, etc.  Children will be asked to perform challenging actions at different stations throughout the course such as hopping on one foot, jumping over yarn for a specific distance, climbing up a ladder of playground equipment, etc.
  • Read - Silly Sally
Child(ren) will read the book Silly Sally with an adult for the first time. Story will be re-read several times during the week.
  • Silly Sally - Actions
Students will move to act out the sections in the story as they are given 2 step directions (Safely place your hands on the ground so your head is upside down and walk backwards, dance a jig like the pig and sing a tune like the loon).
