Strand 3: Civics

Students will analyze their role as citizens in a school and a community.

Compelling Questions:

  • How do rules and laws affect your family, your school, and your community?
  • What are the roles and responsibilities of citizens and government in your community?
  • What makes someone a good leader?
  • What purposes do symbols serve, and how can symbols unite a community?

Standard 1.3.4

Identify the symbols, landmarks, and essential documents of the school, community, state, and nation (including the national motto and state emblem). Demonstrate how to show respect for those items, including care and disposal of the United States flag.
  • American Founders and Constitution Month Constitutional Fitness
    This is an optional program for use by Utah LEAs, schools, and teachers to observe Founders Month and Consitution Day. It aligns with and supports mastery of many Utah Core Social Studies Standards in grade K-5. Standards alignment is provided, along with resources for possible use.
  • Capturing Utah's Symbols and Landmarks
    Students will take digital pictures of Utah symbols and landmarks they find in their neighborhoods or communities. They will email them to their teacher, and the teacher will put them into a slideshow or movie to share with the class. This lesson was created by Traci Rindlisbach. 
  • Community Buildings Walking Field Trip
    In this lesson students will learn about the different locations within a community and the function the have within the community. They will gain an udnerstanding of the diffent funcitons of the locations. Through a walking tour of their community, students will be able to use and iPad to take photos of the different locations in the community and create a simple iMovie that puts there photos together and alows them to share what they know about the location and how it benefits their community. Photo Citation:- Busby, Rebecca.
