Lesson Plans

Strand 3: Civics

Students will learn and exhibit traits of good citizenship.

Compelling Questions:

• Why are rules important? What can happen when rules are broken?
• What are ways we feel like we belong and are welcome in our school and community?
• What are your responsibilities at home and at school?
• What purposes do symbols of our school, community, and country serve?
• Who in your community promotes the welfare and safety of others?

Standard K.3.3

Identify ways that people work together to build a strong community (for example, parents, religious leaders, teachers and other school personnel, police officers, firefighters, soldiers, business owners).

• A Bearrific Home Adventure
  Activities help students learn to keep a journal.
• ART, TECHNOLOGY, & SOCIAL STUDIES: Edward Curtis Style Portraits

• K - Act. 12: Our Community Helpers
  Learning about community helpers, such as police officers, fire fighters and hospital workers, and taking community field trips will help students understand how they fit into their community and the world.
• K - Act. 18: Project School
  This lesson plan provides many ideas for students' investigation of items, people and places in around the school.
• Occupations- A Genius Hour Lesson
  This a Genius Hour lesson for younger elementary age students. The students will be thinking of an occupation they want to study, research it , and  then share their project with the class. Picture taken by Angela Bullock.
• Our Community Helpers
  The activities in this lesson will help students understand their surroundings and how they fit into their family, community, and the world.
• Project School
  This lesson plan provides many ideas for students' investigation of items, people and places in around the school.
• We Are Alike and We Are Different
  Students will create a paper face and a paper face book to recognize similarities and differences.
