Reading (3.R)

Students will learn to proficiently read and comprehend grade level literature and informational text, including seminal U.S. documents of historical and literary significance, at the high end of the grade level text complexity band, with scaffolding as needed. *Standard R.4 includes an asterisk to refer educators back to the Text Complexity Grade Bands and Associated Lexile Ranges in the introduction of the standards.

Standard 3.R.5:

Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers. (RL & RI)
  • Annotate Text in Google Docs
    Students learn how to annoate text in Google Docs.
  • From Fact to Fiction: Drawing and Writing Stories
    Students gather factual information about frogs and toads to create nonfiction and fiction stories. Drawing is used for prewriting.
  • I Used My Own Words! Paraphrasing Informational Texts
    Tell me about it in your own words! If students can paraphrase the information they have read, then youand they can be confident that they understand it.

  • Unplugged Hello Ruby: Journey Inside the Computer (Ch. 5 - Hardware of a Computer)
    This is a computer science lesson plan created by educators in the South Sanpete School District. After reading Chapter 5 of Hello Ruby: Journey Inside the Computer, students will describe the different components of a computer?s hardware by explicitly referring to the text. Next, students will act as different parts of a computer. The lesson is designed for third grade and includes modifications for grades K-5.
  • Winter
    This lesson is designed for beginning writers to develop an understanding of opinion/persuasive writing. Students will examine a piece of work written by an author using opinion writing. Students will be guided through how to use a graphic organizer to help organize their writing and to assure all the proper elements have been included in their opinion writing.
