Reading (3.R)

Students will learn to proficiently read and comprehend grade level literature and informational text, including seminal U.S. documents of historical and literary significance, at the high end of the grade level text complexity band, with scaffolding as needed. *Standard R.4 includes an asterisk to refer educators back to the Text Complexity Grade Bands and Associated Lexile Ranges in the introduction of the standards.

Standard 3.R.4:

Read grade-level text* with accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. (RL & RI)
  • Annotate Text in Google Docs
    Students learn how to annoate text in Google Docs.
  • Characters and how their actions contributed to the sequence of events.
    The teacher will demonstrate how to describe how to describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events. Then fill out a data worksheet collection this information. The teacher will give the student time to work with a partner to describe the main character in a book they have just read and fill out the same information data sheet. Then the teacher will demonstrate how to use that information to complete a Presentation in Mac Keynote Slide and then will allow students time to make their own presentations, which will need to contain components in the assignment rubric.   • Creating Readers Theater Scripts from Informational Text
    This article discusses how creating Readers Theater scripts from informational text can improve fluency and build comprehension.
  • From Fact to Fiction: Drawing and Writing Stories
    Students gather factual information about frogs and toads to create nonfiction and fiction stories. Drawing is used for prewriting.
  • I Used My Own Words! Paraphrasing Informational Texts
    Tell me about it in your own words! If students can paraphrase the information they have read, then youand they can be confident that they understand it.
  • Name Tag Glyphs
    In this lesson, students practice a way to communicate without words by using a glyph. They create a name card using information about themselves. Students also interpret glyphs made by others.
  • Planet Research Project
    This is a lesson plan where students write an informational paragraph about a planet and create a project in Apple Keynote with pictures, audio and labels about the facts they found researching a planet. 
  • Reading Fluency, Expression, and Sound Effects
    This lesson is an Apple technology integrated lesson designed to help students practice reading for accuracy, fluency and expression. Students will practice an perform a readers theater or choral reading of their choice and record it with sound effects for a finished product.
  • Teaching Fluency Using Readers Theatre
    Students will work together to prepare and perform a Readers Theatre using classic Dr. Seuss stories.
