Strand 5.1: CHARACTERISTICS AND INTERACTIONS OF EARTH'S SYSTEMS
Earth's major systems are the geosphere (solid and molten rock, soil, and sediments), the hydrosphere (water and ice), the atmosphere (air), and the biosphere (living things, including humans). Within these systems, the location of Earth's land and water can be described. Also, these systems interact in multiple ways. Weathering and erosion are examples of interactions between Earth's systems. Some interactions cause landslides, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions that impact humans and other organisms. Humans cannot eliminate natural hazards, but solutions can be designed to reduce their impact.
Standard 5.1.1
Analyze and interpret data to describe
patterns of Earth's features. Emphasize most earthquakes and volcanoes occur in bands that are often along the boundaries between continents and oceans while major mountain chains may be found inside continents or near their edges. Examples of data could include maps showing locations of mountains on continents and the ocean floor or the locations of volcanoes and earthquakes. (ESS2.B)

*DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY VIRTUAL TOUR OF THE ROCK CYCLE IN UTAH
Students will create a tour of the topic they have been assigned. Topic will center around the rock cycle including formation of rocks, and weathering and erosion of rocks. Students will use a minimum of 6 original photos and 2 CC images to complete the assignment. Students will need to include the important elements they are supposed to convey and will teach the other class members in a jigsaw using Jamboard. The students will have 3 weeks with 10 lessons to complete the assignment. Extra credit for converting one original image into a CC image to share!"Rock City" by snowpeak is licensed under CC BY 2.0

A Teachers Guide to Stratovolcanoes of the World
The purpose of this Guide is to provide additional material to educators interested in using the Stratovolcanoes of the World poster published by the National Geophysical Data Center in August
2000. For each volcano featured on the poster, NGDC provides a map showing the location of the volcano, a table of facts, a short fictional story to bring the volcano to life, and a section with questions to ponder, suggested activities, and additional references. Key words in bold throughout the text, are defined in the Glossary. Finally, we provide a more extensive list of references and resources as well as some simple activities suitable for grades 5-8. Note: It needs to to be less direct instruction and more investigation. But all the info is there and nice ELA reading (NSTA).

In this lesson, students will discover, explore and analyze data to find patterns of formation and location of volcanoes on Earth. Students will create an authentic project as a demonstration of learning using their choice of ipad tools.
