Strand 1.2: THE NEEDS OF LIVING THINGS AND THEIR OFFSPRING

Living things (plants and animals, including humans) depend on their surroundings to get what they need, including food, water, shelter, and a favorable temperature. Plants and animals have external features that allow them to survive in a variety of environments. Young plants and animals are similar but not exactly like their parents. In many kinds of animals, parents and offspring engage in behaviors that help the offspring to survive.

Standard 1.2.3

Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the patterns of plants and nonhuman animals that are alike, but not exactly like, their parents. An example could include that most carrots are orange and shaped like a cone but may be different sizes or have differing tastes. (LS3.A, LS3.B)

• 1st Grade - Act. 17: Observing Plants Through a Journal
  During the class' plant unit, students will observe a plant and write and illustrate what they have learned in their discovery journal.
• Animal Report Documentary Film
  This project is designed to help students create a short documentary film using the information they gathered to create an animal report. It can be used after writing an animal report or can be adapted to be used as the actual animal report. It can be designed to appear as a documentary series with all students having the same title opening, or be completely standalone. Students will be learning to find creative commons photos and videos to use in their film. • Baby Looks Like Mom Lesson Plan
  A lesson plan that is about moms and babies look alike. (Going 3D with GRC)
• Life Cycles
  This is a lesson is a designed to help first grade teachers and their students learn about life cycles.  It is a springboard into learning about other animal life cycles, how aniumals are not like thier parents, and the similarities and differences between parents and offspriong. This lesson uses Gale in Context from Utah Online Library culminting in creating an Adobe Spark project. The activities in this lesson can be completed in 30 minute sessions. 
• Mother and Baby Animal Patterns
  This lesson supports the 1st-grade science core strand 1.2: The Needs of Living Things and Their Offspring. Students obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about mother and baby animals and begin to construct an explanation of patterns in the behavior of parents and offspring which helps offspring to survive. 
• Young Grass Looks a Lot Like Old Grass Lesson Plan
  A lesson plan that is about how old grass looks like new grass. (Going 3D with GRC)
