Strand 1.2: THE NEEDS OF LIVING THINGS AND THEIR OFFSPRING

Living things (plants and animals, including humans) depend on their surroundings to get what they need, including food, water, shelter, and a favorable temperature. Plants and animals have external features that allow them to survive in a variety of environments. Young plants and animals are similar but not exactly like their parents. In many kinds of animals, parents and offspring engage in behaviors that help the offspring to survive.

Standard 1.2.1

Plan and carry out an investigation to determine the effect of sunlight and water on plant growth. Emphasize investigations that test one variable at a time. (LS1.C)

• 1st Grade - Act. 17: Observing Plants Through a Journal
  During the class' plant unit, students will observe a plant and write and illustrate what they have learned in their discovery journal.
• Plant Investigation
  This is a lesson plan created by a first-grade teacher. It is meant to assist teachers with teaching the SEED standards for first grade. It uses resources from Thanksgiving Point and Generation Genius.
• Seeds Experiment 1st Grade
  Students will review the parts of a plant and what a plant needs to grow. Then students will plan and execute an experiement to see the effects of EITHER sunlight or water on the growth of plants by planting 2 seeds and watching their growth.
