Strand 3: Civics

Students are introduced to the concept of government. Students learn about the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, explain how people must work together to resolve conflict, and understand the importance of respecting differences.

Compelling Questions:

  • What are the benefits and responsibilities of being good citizens?
  • How do classrooms, communities, and families work together to resolve conflicts they face?
  • What are the traits of effective leaders?
  • How do people decide who governs us? Why is it important for citizens to learn about candidates and to vote?

Standard 2.3.5

Identify current leaders (for example, family, school, community, governor, national leaders) and their responsibilities. Discuss the traits of effective leaders.
  • 2nd Grade Lesson Ideas: Code & Go Mouse
This is a list of potential ideas based off a specific technology. None of these ideas are fully developed lessons. Please make changes and adaptations as necessary for the students in your class.
  • Workers at Our School
This lesson will help students to "identify the roles that people have in the school and explain the importance of each member" (2nd Grade Social Studies S2.O2a). After instruction on several different school workers, students will work in groups to take photos that respresent three of the roles of a chosen school worker. They will then present those photos in a web page to the class. Thumbnail Image Attribution: Helpers at Our School © 2023 by Tiele Hickman is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0
